Duga Jak began as a fashion design and tailoring business founded by proprietress Ramou Nyang in 1969. Ramou studied fashion design and tailoring in the UK prior to establishing the business in the Gambia, leading to its success as one of the country's premier fashion houses.

Duga Jak now have an outlet in Birmingham in the the UK to market African and European fashion garments and also arts, crafts and ethnic artefacts from around the world. These include:-

We can supply artefacts from around the world to schools for educational use in the context of Art, Religious and Cultural studies. These may be purchased individually, in boxed sets, or on approval. Also a sale-or-return facilty is provided for school fairs/fetes from which the school can earn commission to boost school funds. Fashion - Profile of Mrs. Aji Ramou Ngum Nyang

Ramou Nyang

Aji Ramou Ngum Nyang was one of the first female qualified designers trained in the UK. She returned to the Gambia in 1969 with a diploma certificate in designing and making of outfits ranging from European, Asian and African styles depicting their diverse cultures. She named the business Duga Jak which means Home of Fashion in the vernacular, ensuring beauty and quality to whoever enters her premises.

As a result of her enthusiasm, dedication and hard work, she brought finesse to the profession in the Gambia. She instantly became famous and has since had many awards for excellence and business prestige. A few of the awards are:

Gomis Promotions 1996, 1997, 1998, organised with Senegambia Hotel, Miss Jongoma Roots contest, organised with the Ministry of Tourism, and Miss Gambia Beauty contest organised with Kairaba Beach Hotel respectively. The recognition of her leadership quality and creativity has been amply demonstrated by her nomination as woman of excellence 2006 seamstress of the year.

She was also recently elected as president of the Association of Fashion Designers in the Gambia(AFDG). She is well known in the tourism industry and she has also actively promoted our traditional wares in the USA and Europe. She delivers total quality and high class tailoring and embroidery in European and African outfits for male, female and children.
